There’s a strange thing that happens when you actually stop and ask someone about their life instead of just moving past them. You start to realize that everyone – the barista who remembers your order, the quiet coworker who never talks much, the stranger you sat next to on a five-hour bus ride – is carrying an entire world inside them that you’ll never know about unless you ask.
I’ve become a little obsessed with this idea lately. That we walk past hundreds of untold stories every single day, each one as complex and layered as our own, and most of the time we never even scratch the surface. We’re all just here, living this strange, brief, earthly experience together, and yet we rarely take the time to really see each other.
So this is my attempt to slow that down, even just a little. A space where I sit with someone – a friend, a stranger, someone doing something quietly remarkable – and actually listen. Not to extract a lesson or a quote, but to understand what it’s like to be them, even for a moment. I want to know what shaped them, what they’re afraid of, what they’re proud of, what they’d tell you if you asked the right question. This is where they get to be fully seen, and where you get to meet someone you might never have noticed otherwise.
